A pox on your house

Well, our house to be precise.

We’ve just come through a frustrating six weeks where either William or Olly have been really unwell.

First William caught tonsillitis which resulted in a very high temperature and him feeling really miserable. We ended up calling out Thames Doc and getting him some antibiotics which sorted him out in a couple of days or so but just as he completed his course of antibiotics he was struck down with Chicken Pox.

But hey, don’t worry right? Because kids that get it when their young don’t get it as badly do they? Well, wrong in our case.

Despite everyone saying that having Chicken Pox when you’re younger is a blessing and you don’t get it so bad (something which led to us taking a laid back approach as the spots came out), William suffered really badly, to the extent of having 30-odd lesions in his mouth. This caused him and us a lost of distress because he couldn’t eat for a couple of days although miraculously they seemed to go as quickly as the appeared. I had expected them to turn into mouth ulcers and hang around for days.

And then it was Olly’s turn. Poor Olly. At only 7 seven months old he caught the virus worse than anybody and being unable to talk or comprehend the situation it was miserable for him. Seeing him lying in his cot writhing in relentless, itchy misery was very upsetting and we couldn’t even explain to him, as we did with William, that he would get better and that he’d never, ever have it again.

Fortunately, they’re both now over the worst. But if someone says to you that kids don’t get chicken pox as badly when their young, treat it with caution.
